Pickleball Christmas gifts: 10 ideas a player will actually use
Share
Pickleball has converted your aunt, your neighbour and half your office. But when it's time to wrap a gift, people often end up with a set of wooden paddles that never leaves the garage. Here are 10 ideas a player will actually bring to the court, from stocking stuffers to the gift that stands out, with what a coach would check before buying.
✦ The short version
- For a beginner: balls matched to where they play, overgrips and protective eyewear
- For a regular player: something to film their games, because almost nobody has ever watched themselves play
- For a competitor: a video analysis, or a paddle only if they picked it themselves
- You don't know their gear: go for what wears out, like balls and overgrips
The safest gift is one that gets used up: it never ends up as a duplicate.

Why pickleball is the easy gift of the year
Most players started less than three years ago. They have a starter paddle, mismatched balls at the bottom of the bag, and rarely anything to protect their eyes or track their progress. That's exactly where a well-chosen gift makes a visible difference from the first game in January.
Canadians play pickleball, up 14% in one year and about 80% since 2022.

Americans played in 2025. It has been the fastest-growing sport in the United States for five years in a row, and 13 to 24 year olds are now the most active age group.
SFIA, 2026 pickleball report
Of American players are women, up from 38.6% in 2020. The sport is getting younger and more balanced every year.

Before you buy: a coach's three questions
Thirty seconds of detective work saves you from the gift that sits in the closet. Ask these questions, or take a discreet look in their bag.
- Where do they play? In a gym or outside? It changes the balls, the shoes and the need for sun protection.
- How long have they played? A beginner needs the essentials. A league player already knows what they like and has strong opinions about their paddle.
- What do they already have? Ball brand, grip condition, eyewear or not. A shiny, darkened grip is your clue.
Which pickleball Christmas gift fits which player
| Player | Probably already has | Give them |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner, under a year | A starter paddle, mismatched balls | The right balls, overgrips, eyewear |
| Regular, 2 to 3 times a week | A favourite paddle, a bag | Phone mount, bottle with phone holder, UV sleeves |
| Competitor, leagues and tournaments | Carefully chosen gear | Video analysis, tournament balls, a paddle only if they choose it |
| Snowbird who plays south in winter | A sunburnt forearm | UV sleeves, insulated bottle, outdoor balls |
| Tennis and pickleball player | Two bags, not much room | The starter kit |
Stocking stuffers
Small size, big use. These are the gifts that get used most often, precisely because they wear out.
Overgrips
An overgrip wraps over the paddle's original grip. It absorbs sweat, restores tack and slightly thickens the handle. A regular player should change it as soon as it turns smooth or starts to tear, which happens fast.
- Why it's a good gift: it wears out, so it's never a duplicate
- What to check: the colour, nothing else
- Bonus: an overgrip adds a little thickness, handy for a handle that feels a bit thin
When the hand slips, the grip tightens. And a tense hand loses all its touch in the kitchen, which is where points are won.

Racquet View Overgrips
A pack of three, in white or green. A tacky surface that absorbs sweat well, compatible with pickleball paddles, tennis racquets and padel racquets.
Shop the overgrips →Balls matched to the season
Pickleballs all look alike, but they aren't interchangeable. An indoor ball has 26 large holes and softer plastic. An outdoor ball has 40 small holes and harder plastic that holds up better in the wind. And in colder climates, there's the temperature: below about 10 °C (50 °F), most balls turn brittle and crack much faster.
- They play in a gym: an indoor ball with 26 holes
- They play outside in summer: a standard outdoor ball, like the Franklin X-40
- They play in spring and fall: a ball formulated for temperature swings, like the Joola Primo
- Avoid: cheap 50-packs, which distort the bounce as soon as you play real points
Ask which ball their club or league uses. Giving them that one means their practice feels like their matches.

Indoor, outdoor, cold weather, durability: it's all in our guide Your pickleball has probably been dead for three games.
UV arm sleeves
Plenty of players use the winter to head south and play in Florida, Arizona or somewhere warm. Two hours in full sun on a hard court is a lot of UV on the forearms, and sunscreen sweats off before the second game. A UPF 50 fabric blocks about 98% of UV rays, with nothing to reapply.
- Who it's for: the snowbird, or the player who spends summers on outdoor courts
- What to check: the size, based on arm and forearm circumference
- Bonus: the light compression keeps the forearm warm on cool mornings

UV Compression Arm Sleeves
UPF 50+ on the forearms, elbows and upper arms, light compression that doesn't restrict the swing, and a fabric that dries fast. Unisex, sold as a pair.

The heart of the list: gifts people rarely buy for themselves, but will use every game.
A phone mount to film their games
This is the gift almost nobody already has. In pickleball, rallies are fast and happen close to the net: you never see yourself play. Two minutes of video show what no partner dares to say, like feet creeping into the kitchen, the paddle dropping between shots or a return of serve that lands short.
- Where it goes: at the centre of the net on the white band, or on the fence for a side or back view
- Setup: a few seconds, no tripod, and safe on court
- Who it's for: the player who wants to improve, or the one who loves sharing their best points
The first habit to check on video: the paddle out in front, at chest height, between every shot. Most recreational players let it drop below the waist and arrive late on the volley.

Racquet View Phone Mount
Designed and made in Quebec. It clips to the net or the fence in seconds and keeps the phone steady, even during fast exchanges at the kitchen line.
Shop the mount →A water bottle with a phone holder
For outdoor courts with no fence nearby, or gyms where you can't clip anything. It keeps them hydrated during the game, then holds the phone to film from the bench or the side of the court.
- Format: 25 oz, vacuum insulated, tall and slim for a good filming angle
- Compatibility: MagSafe, with a magnetic sticker included for Android phones and older iPhones
- Bonus: it fits a standard car cup holder

Phone Holder Water Bottle
An insulated stainless steel bottle with a built-in magnetic mount. The water stays cold during the game, and the phone films without a tripod.
Shop the bottle →Protective eyewear
In doubles, close to the net, a hard-hit ball arrives in a fraction of a second. Eyewear isn't mandatory, and almost nobody wears it. That's exactly why it makes a good gift: people don't buy it for themselves.
- Standard: look for ASTM F803 certification, the reference for racquet sports
- Lenses: polycarbonate, impact resistant
- Fit: a frame that doesn't slide with sweat
- Outdoors: a light or photochromic tint, so they don't lose the ball in the shade
The researchers who counted these injuries recommend that all players wear eyewear that meets ASTM standards. The average age of the injured players is around 60.
Court shoes
The most underrated gift on the list. Many players play in running shoes. But a running shoe is built to move forward, while pickleball demands side steps, sudden stops and quick changes of direction. A court shoe has a flatter sole and better lateral support.
- Indoors: a non-marking sole, required in many facilities
- Outdoors: a more durable sole, built for hard courts
- Sizing: keep the receipt, or give a gift card from the store with a note
Among players 60 and older, slips, trips and falls are the most common cause of injury. If the person plays in running shoes, this is the most useful gift in this article.
The gift that stands out
For the person who plays a lot, or who wants to reach the next level.
A new paddle
It's the most appreciated gift when it's well chosen, and the riskiest when it isn't. Every player has preferences, and a paddle that doesn't suit them will stay at the bottom of the bag.
- Weight: lighter is quicker at the kitchen. Heavier brings more power and stability, but more load on the elbow
- Shape: a standard shape gives a wider, more forgiving hitting zone. An elongated shape gives more reach, with a smaller sweet spot
- Grip size: too small and they squeeze. Too big and they lose wrist mobility
- Tournaments: check that the model is on the USA Pickleball approved equipment list, the reference in most tournaments
Don't buy it blind. Many shops and clubs lend demo paddles. Give a gift card from the shop instead, with a note: let's go try some together.
A video analysis of their game
The player sends a short clip of a single stroke, a serve, a forehand or a backhand, and gets personalized feedback: what to fix first, what already works, and drills matched to their level.
- The clip: 2 to 5 seconds, one movement at a time
- Who it's for: the player who has plateaued for months without knowing why
- Last minute: nothing to ship, the perfect gift if you're running late

Racquet View Pickleball Video Analysis
A second pair of eyes on their stroke, with concrete corrections and targeted drills. Perfect paired with the phone mount: they film, then get it analyzed.
Shop the video analysis →A starter kit
A good share of pickleball players come from tennis, and many still play both. The kit brings together everything needed to film and track progress in a single gift.
- To film: the phone mount and the bottle with phone holder
- To improve: a 35-session guided journal and access to video analysis
- Bonus: overgrips and a dampener
- Good to know: the journal and the dampener are designed for tennis, which is why it suits someone who plays both

The phone mount, the bottle with phone holder, the progress journal, overgrips, a dampener and video analysis, all in one box to put under the tree.

What a coach sees come back every January, and almost never gets used.
- The wooden paddle set: great for kids in the driveway, not for someone already playing at a club
- A high-end paddle for a beginner: they won't feel the difference for months, and they may not have found their style yet
- Cheap bulk balls: they crack fast and distort the bounce
- Cotton clothing: it holds sweat and gets heavy after twenty minutes. Go for a technical fabric that dries fast
The video analysis has nothing to ship. Otherwise, a gift card from their club for lessons or a few court bookings always lands well, especially with an invitation to play together.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best pickleball Christmas gift for a beginner?
Balls suited to where they play, overgrips and protective eyewear. Skip the high-end paddle: a beginner won't feel the difference for several months.
How do I know whether to buy indoor or outdoor pickleballs?
Indoor balls have 26 large holes and softer plastic. Outdoor balls have 40 small holes and harder plastic that holds up better in the wind. If you're not sure, ask which ball their club or league uses.
What paddle weight should I give as a gift?
If you don't know their preferences, don't buy a paddle. Otherwise: a lighter paddle is quicker at the net, a heavier one brings more power and stability but puts more load on the arm. The best option is to let them try a few.
What is a good pickleball gift on a small budget?
Overgrips, a pack of quality balls or UV arm sleeves. They wear out or get used every game, so they never end up as a duplicate.
What is a good last-minute pickleball gift?
A digital gift like a video analysis, which has nothing to ship, or a gift card from their club for lessons or court time.
