You switched to a textured string, the one everyone calls "best for spin." And you felt nothing. It isn't in your head, and the string isn't bad. Your racquet already settled the question before you did.

There's a line repeated in every club, every pro shop and just about every article on the subject: "get a textured string, it gives you more spin."
It's the advice that makes the most players spend money for nothing. Not because it's false, but because it's incomplete, and it skips the one variable that actually decides the outcome: what your racquet allows.
So let's take the time to understand the mechanism, once and for all. After that, choosing a string becomes simple, and you stop buying blind and hoping something changes.
What ALU Power actually is
Before talking about Rough, you need to understand the base string, because that's where everything is decided.
Luxilon combines a copolymer with a fluorocarbon resin and aluminium fibres, in a poly-ether-ether construction. This isn't marketing: that composition delivers two things few polys offer together.
Near-perfect manufacturing consistency. Two sets bought six months apart play the same. That might sound secondary when you play on Sundays, but it's exactly why this string has dominated the tour for twenty years. Nobody at pro level wants a surprise the night before a match.
Immunity to humidity. The behaviour doesn't shift between a damp September evening and a dry July afternoon. In our climate, with our indoor-outdoor swings, that matters more than people think.
The trade-off is blunt: it's a firm monofilament, built for a player who generates their own ball speed. If you're waiting for the string to do the work, you'll be disappointed, and so will your arm.
What texture really changes
Here's the part almost nobody explains correctly.
A string bed produces spin mainly through snapback. On impact, the mains slide sideways, then snap violently back into place. That violent return is what imparts rotation to the ball. A smooth string slides cleanly against the crosses, so it returns cleanly.
Texture works in two opposite directions at once. On one hand, it increases bite on the ball at contact. On the other, it increases friction between mains and crosses, which slows the snapback and accelerates shear wear.
In other words: you trade longevity for immediate bite. And the net result depends entirely on how much movement your string pattern allowed in the first place.
Open pattern (16x19): the strings already move a lot. The extra friction eats part of the snapback, and wear climbs. The net benefit is thin.
Dense pattern (18x20): the strings barely move. Texture becomes a way to recover spin the pattern doesn't give you naturally. That's where Rough earns its place.
Apply it to your racquet
Let's move from theory to practice. We'll take a benchmark textured string, Luxilon ALU Power Rough, and look at what each frame does with it. The reasoning holds for any textured string: the pattern commands, not the brand.
The most forgiving frame of the three. And that's the problem.
The Ezone 100 is a generous racquet: large head, open pattern, power and spin available without forcing anything. It isn't short on much.
With ALU Power Rough, you're adding bite to a frame that wasn't lacking it, and you pay in wear. The string bed moves a lot on this type of racquet, so the friction created by the texture works against you more than elsewhere. The mains shift and notch faster than with the smooth version.

A demanding frame with a demanding string. Nothing compensates for anything.
Despite the shared name, the 98 is a different racquet. Smaller head, more built-in control, less margin off center. It rewards clean striking.
It's also the frame where ALU Power makes the most sense, Rough or not: you get exactly what you produce. Some players love that, others find it punishing. Since the 98 generates less free power than the 100, the extra bite from Rough carries a bit more value here: it helps bring the ball down when you attack.
- Verdict: defensible, with an accepted trade-off
- The trade-off: faster wear, so more frequent restringing
- Suggested tension: 50 to 52 lbs
- Best for: attacking players who need the ball to drop
Three stiff elements stacked together. Watch your arm.
Same string-pattern logic as the Yonex frames: open, snapback already available, marginal gain from texture. But there's an additional factor here.
The HEAD frame is stiffer than the Ezones. At 52 lbs, with a firm textured poly, you're stacking three stiff elements: rigid frame, rigid string, high tension. If you have any history of elbow or shoulder trouble, this is not the setup to pick.
- Verdict: smooth version, and at lower tension
- Suggested tension: 48 to 50 lbs rather than 52
- Red flag: any history of tennis elbow
- Alternative: hybrid with ALU Power mains, multifilament crosses
The only case where Rough solves a real problem.
This is the best scenario in the whole article. The dense pattern restricts string movement, so natural snapback is low and you're short on spin. That's the accepted trade-off of an 18x20: maximum control, rotation that's hard to generate.
Texture fills exactly that gap. Here, Rough isn't a marketing gimmick, it's a solution to a genuine limitation of the frame. And because the strings move less, the wear penalty is far less pronounced than on an open pattern.

- Bonus: wear penalty much lower than on 16x19
- Suggested tension: 50 to 52 lbs
If you play an 18x20 and your balls aren't dropping in, try texture before dropping your tension by 5 lbs. You'll keep your control instead of trading it away for spin.
Why 52 lbs is the tipping point
52 lbs is the upper limit where a firm polyester stays livable.
Below that, you gain comfort but gradually lose the precision that justifies paying for ALU Power over a generic poly. Above it, the string turns punishing on anything off center, and vibration feedback into the forearm climbs fast.
Practical advice: if your arm starts complaining after two sessions, drop the tension before changing strings. A 4 lb drop often delivers more comfort than a model change, and it costs you one restring instead of a season of trial and error.

Set or reel: do the math
This is the part most players never calculate, and it's where the money actually is.
A 12 m set covers one string job. A 100 m reel gives you roughly eight. If you restring three or four times a year, the reel pays for itself in a season and a half. If you string your own racquets, or string for one or two hitting partners, the gap becomes substantial.
The reel has a second advantage that rarely gets mentioned: batch consistency. Eight string jobs from the same reel play identically. Eight sets bought separately, not quite.
Several listings show "16 gauge" when the product is a 125, meaning 1.25 mm. Go by the diameter in millimetres, never the gauge label, which a good share of third-party sellers enter incorrectly.

When to restring (it's not when it breaks)
This is the most common mistake among recreational players: waiting for the break.
A polyester dies before it breaks. ALU Power loses its elasticity between 15 and 20 hours of play. Past that point, you're playing with a string bed that returns nothing while your forearm absorbs the shock. You don't feel it coming, because the decline is gradual. You only feel it when you put fresh string in.
The simple rule: restring as many times per year as you play per week. Three times a week means three restrings minimum, even without breakage. And Rough ages faster than the smooth version because of internal friction, so shave a few hours off that estimate.
Who this string is not for
Might as well say it plainly, because nobody does.
If you don't break a string in under 10 hours
You probably don't need a full polyester bed. Durability is the main argument for poly, and you'd be paying in comfort for a benefit you never use. A hybrid, ALU Power in the mains and a multifilament in the crosses, gives you most of the control with far less strain on the arm.
If you have a history of elbow or shoulder issues
This isn't the string to pick, and certainly not at 52 lbs on a stiff frame. The new generation of soft polyesters exists precisely for this profile, and they're no longer the watered-down versions they were five years ago.
If you're a beginner
You need help from your string, not extra control. A synthetic gut or a multifilament will give you more, for a third of the price.

More bite at contact, yes. More final spin depends on your string pattern. On an open pattern, the extra friction cancels part of the gain by slowing snapback. On a dense pattern, the gain is clear.

Which gauge should I choose?
1.25 mm is the standard compromise and the right starting point. Thinner gives more bite and less durability, thicker does the opposite. Adjust after a full season on the 125.
